About the Journal
The journal of Applied Issues in Islamic Education is an open-access, peer-reviewed quarterly journal published in Persian (with extended English abstracts) by the Academy of Scientific Studies in Education of Iran. It encompasses a broad range of disciplines, including pedagogy, educational management, educational research, educational psychology, Islamic education, and the philosophy of education. As the official scientific publication of the Academy, this interdisciplinary journal invites original research, review articles, and other scholarly contributions, provided they rigorously adhere to research ethics and accepted academic standards.
Special Issue Overview
Applied Issues in Islamic Education invites scholars, practitioners, and researchers to submit original manuscripts for an upcoming special issue centered on educational resilience in the Islamic world, encompassing theoretical frameworks, practical applications, and cross-contextual perspectives. We welcome contributions that investigate the dynamics and implementation processes of resilience, present rigorous empirical findings, and articulate the broader implications of these advancements for contemporary educational practice.
Suggested Topics
We welcome original research articles, review papers, short communications, and case studies. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
1. Theoretical Frameworks (Moving from "What" to "How")
- Define the Integrative Mechanism: Propose a theoretical model where spiritual resilience (reliance on God/Tawakkul) serves as the primary driver, which subsequently buffers emotional distress and informs ethical social conduct.
- Operationalize "Upstream Documents": The term "national policy frameworks" is still vague. Specify which exact documents you will analyze (e.g., the National Education Philosophy, the 20-Year National Vision, or specific Ministry of Education strategic plans). Recommend using a policy coherence analysis (e.g., OECD frameworks) to systematically measure the alignment, or misalignment, between Islamic theoretical ideals and actual state-mandated curricula.
- Introduce a Developmental Axis: Resilience manifests differently across age groups. Suggest subdividing the theoretical model to account for developmental stages (early childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood), as Islamic religious obligations (Taklif) and cognitive maturity shift significantly across these phases.
2. Practical Applications (Moving from "Roles" to "Interventions")
- Shift from Static Roles to Dynamic Interactions: We propose an ecological interaction model (adapting Bronfenbrenner’s theory to an Islamic context). Suggest investigating how the alignment or discord between a child's home religious practices and school religious instruction affects resilience outcomes.
- Evidence-Based Pedagogical Tools and Narrative Pedagogy: We suggest integrating narrative pedagogy (using Quranic stories of prophets like Yusuf or Ayyub as case studies for coping), and adapting Islamic mindfulness (Muraqabah) exercises into daily classroom routines. Propose specific, measurable outcomes for these interventions (e.g., pre/post-tests measuring academic buoyancy and emotional regulation).
- Identifying Systemic and Pedagogical Barriers to Resilience Cultivation: Recommend a mixed-methods approach (surveys + semi-structured interviews) to diagnose specific inhibitors, such as high-stakes exam cultures that contradict formative Islamic assessment philosophies, or a lack of continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers in pastoral care.
3. Actionable Strategies & Comparative Studies (Moving from "General" to "Specific")
- Define Clear Comparative Variables: We suggest comparing a Most Similar Systems Design (MSSD) or Most Different Systems Design (MDSD). For example, compare a Gulf state (high funding, conservative curriculum) with a Southeast Asian state (moderate funding, pluralistic curriculum) to isolate how socioeconomic context moderates the model's effectiveness. Alternatively, compare countries that have experienced conflict (e.g., Palestine, Yemen) versus stable states to test the model's robustness under duress.
- Integrate Interdisciplinary Bridges: Instead of just stating "interdisciplinary studies," explicitly name the external disciplines you will draw upon. We suggest Positive Psychology (e.g., integrating Seligman's PERMA model with Islamic virtues), Neuro-education (exploring how spiritual practices like Salat affect the brain's stress-response systems), and Sociology of Religion.
- Propose a Phased Implementation Roadmap: Propose a Participatory Action Research (PAR) framework 3-phase plan: (1) Co-construction of the resilience model with local Islamic scholars and educators, (2) Pilot implementation in 3–5 diverse schools (urban, rural, religious, and secular-national), and (3) Iterative refinement based on stakeholder feedback and quantitative efficacy data.
Note: Submissions addressing other highly relevant and innovative topics within the scope of the special issue theme are also encouraged.
